What is local SEO?

Local SEO means getting found on Google by the people near you, the ones who type your trade and their suburb. When they do, the first thing they see is three business listings with stars and a call button, and only after that the websites. Each of those is a Google listing: the free listing Google gives every business, with your reviews, your hours and a call button. Google calls it a Google Business Profile. Local SEO is the work that gets your listing into those three, and it is the same work in every state; the only Australian parts are the numbers, the prices and the dashboard, further down.

Written for trade businesses: plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, painters, roofers, pest control and the rest, anywhere in Australia. If you run a different kind of business, most of this still applies, and you are welcome to book a call.

The three at the top are business listings, not websites. They get most of the calls.

What the work is

Four jobs, and they are the same for every trade:

  • Your Google listing filled out properly: the suburbs you cover, the type of business, every service you do, your hours, photos of real jobs.
  • Reviews that keep coming: a steady ask after each job, never a burst.
  • The suburbs you cover on the listing, and a real page on your website for each one you want work from.
  • A website Google trusts: fast, with a page for each service, so the listing and the website help each other.

That is the work we do trade by trade on local SEO for tradies. This page is the Australia-wide picture: what is different here, and what it costs. If you would rather set your Google listing up yourself, our Google Business Profile guide walks you through it.

How many people search for a tradie

These are real Australian Google searches, counted each month. "Plumber near me" and "electrician near me" are each typed about 22,200 times a month. Before we promise anything, we pull the numbers for your trade and your suburbs, and build the plan around what is actually there.

Why work with us.

  • Results you can check

Our clients are named on this website with their real numbers, and you can read the case study before you ring us.

  • You always know what you paid for

Every month you get a plain report: what we did, what moved, and what is next. No guessing, no report you need a translator for.

  • We only work with trade businesses

Every client we have is a trade. You will not have to explain how the jobs come in, and getting you found is how the next trade business finds us.

What is different in Australia

Three things on this page are Australian, and one is not.

  • The searches are Australian. The near-me numbers and click costs in the table further up are Australian searches in Australian dollars, pulled 6 September 2026.
  • The prices are Australian. Cheap SEO here is about $300 a month and quality SEO closer to $3,000, from the Australian pricing guides we checked on 1 September 2026, tier by tier in our SEO cost guide.
  • No question-and-answer box. Australian listings have no public question-and-answer section, so those answers go on your website (checked inside an Australian client's Google Business Profile dashboard, June 2026).
  • The listing rules are the same everywhere. The rules further down are Google's own, including the limit of 20 areas, and they apply the same in every state, which is why one plan works for every trade we run it for.

For every size of trade business

What showing up on Google does for you depends on where you are at.

  • 1-3 on the crew

    Starter

You are on the tools most days and the work comes from word of mouth. The first win is showing up at all when someone in your own suburb searches your trade, so the phone rings without you chasing it.

  • 4-9 on the crew

    Growing

There is a crew to keep busy now, and a quiet week costs more. We get you showing up across every suburb you cover, so the enquiries come in steady enough to plan the week around.

  • 10+ on the crew

    Established

People in the area already know the name. Now it is about being the first business Google shows across all of it, and holding that spot while you take the next suburbs.

Google's listing rules for tradies

  • Up to 20 suburbs, not one address Most of the trade businesses we work with drive to the job rather than run a shopfront, and Google has a listing built for exactly that. You tell Google the suburbs you work in instead of a street address, up to 20 of them. Your website is not held to 20, but a suburb page only earns its place when it is a real page: the jobs you have actually done there, not the same page with the suburb swapped. This rule and the next four are from Google Business Profile Help, read September 2026.
  • About two hours' drive from your base Google wants the whole area you list to sit within about two hours of driving from where you start the day. Suburbs you never work in do not belong on the list.
  • Hide your address unless clients come to you If clients do not visit you during your stated hours, Google says to hide the address. If you do show one, it needs a permanent sign out the front.
  • Pick one type of business You choose one main type of business, as specific as the list allows (Plumber, not Contractor), and add extras only for separate lines of work. Never one per service.
  • Bought or fake reviews now pause your reviews A burst of suspicious reviews pauses new ones, hides some for a while, and puts a public notice on your listing. Ask one client at a time, after the job, and never pay for a review.

Local SEO questions?

See if we answered it below.

What are the three businesses at the top of Google?

The three with stars and a call button, like the ones in the Google results mockup near the top of this page. They are Google listings, not websites: the free listing Google gives every business, which Google calls a Google Business Profile. Whatever the trade and wherever you are in Australia, those three sit above every website, and people can ring straight from them.

Is local SEO different from SEO?

Yes. Local SEO is your Google listing plus a real page for each suburb you cover: getting the listing into the three at the top when someone nearby types your trade. SEO is your website for everything else people type about your trade: getting it into the list of websites underneath. One is the listing and the suburb pages, the other is the website. Most trade businesses want both, and our SEO for tradies page covers the website side.

How long does local SEO take in Australia?

In our experience, 4 to 8 weeks for the first movement in a quieter area and 3 to 6 months in a busy city one, and that holds in every state, because it is the same Google listing everywhere. Ads are faster, but once you are in the three listings the enquiries keep coming without a per-click bill.

What does local SEO cost in Australia?

Cheap SEO in Australia is about $300 a month, and quality SEO, the kind that gets a trade business found, is closer to $3,000 a month, on the published Australian pricing guides we checked on 1 September 2026. We do not publish a price list, because every job is scoped to your suburbs and where you are starting from, and there is no lock-in. The full picture, tier by tier, is in our SEO cost guide.

Does local SEO actually work?

The results are on this website with names on them. Quick Mick's Plumbing in the Blue Mountains is on page one of Google for around 40 searches and gets about 10 new clients a month from it, with no ad spend (KINGTRADIE client result, July 2026). The whole story is in the Quick Mick's case study.

Why does local SEO help my business?

Because someone who types your trade and their suburb into Google is looking for a tradie right now, and the three listings at the top get most of those calls. Getting in there means the phone rings without you paying for every click, and the spot keeps working month after month. An ad stops the day you stop paying.

How many suburbs can I list?

Up to 20. If you drive to the job, you tell Google the suburbs you work in instead of one address, and the whole area should sit within about two hours' drive of your base. Your website is not held to 20, but a suburb page only earns its place when it is a real page: the jobs you have actually done there, not the same page with the suburb swapped. That suburb-by-suburb work is what we do on local SEO for tradies.

Do I need a shopfront address?

No. Plenty of trade businesses do not have one, and Google has a listing type built for that. If clients do not come to you during your stated hours, Google says to hide the address, and your listing runs on the suburbs you cover instead. If you do have a yard or an office that clients visit, you can show it, as long as there is a permanent sign at the door.

Who is this page for?

Trade businesses anywhere in Australia: plumbers, electricians, builders, landscapers, painters, roofers, pest control, locksmiths, air conditioning and the rest. That is all we work with, and every result on this website is a trade business. If you run a different kind of local business, most of this page still applies, and you are welcome to book a call. We will tell you straight whether we are the right fit.
