What exactly is local SEO?

Local SEO means getting your business found on Google by people near you. When someone nearby searches for your trade, the first thing Google shows is three business listings with stars and a call button, and only then the websites. That listing is free. Google calls it a Google Business Profile, and most trade businesses have one that was never set up properly. Local SEO is the work that gets your listing into those three, and gets your website coming up for the suburbs you cover.

Why it matters: the three listings get most of the calls. If your business is not one of them, the call goes to a business that is.

When is local SEO worth it?

It suits any trade business that lives on local work and wants a steadier flow of it. It pays off when:

  • people in your area are already searching for what you do
  • you cover a set of suburbs you want more jobs from
  • you'd rather own that spot than rent it through ads month after month

This page is about your Google listing and the suburbs you cover. Getting your website found for everything else is SEO for tradies. If you want to set the listing up yourself, our Google Business Profile guide walks you through it.

We know the numbers before we start.

Local SEO only brings you jobs if people near you are actually searching for what you do. So before we promise anything, we pull the real search numbers for your trade and your suburbs, and build the plan around the demand that's genuinely there. For example, "plumber near me" is searched about 22,200 times a month in Australia, and every search from someone looking to hire a plumber, added up suburb by suburb, comes to 1.6 million a month (our count, on how many people search for a plumber). "Electrician near me" is also 22,200 a month, and every electrician search added up comes to about a million (on how many people search for an electrician). "Builders near me" is 4,400 a month, and every builder search added up, renovations included, comes to 1.6 million (on how many people search for a builder). "Painters near me" is 5,400 a month, and every painter search added up comes to about half a million (on how many people search for a painter). "Carpenter near me" is 3,600 a month, and every carpenter search added up comes to about 84,000 (on how many people search for a carpenter).

Why KINGTRADIE for your SEO?

  • We know how to get you results

We've got the data, the tools and the track record to get trade businesses showing up on Google. Our clients are named on this website with their real numbers.

  • We keep it real

You'll always know what you're paying for and what's been done. We keep you in the loop when we hit a goal or spot an opportunity worth jumping on.

  • Your success is our success

Your results are our best advertising. Every trade business we get found on Google shows the next one we know our stuff, so we are genuinely invested in getting you there.

What gets you into the top three

Google says three things decide which businesses it shows: how well your listing matches what was typed, how close you are, and how well known your business is. These four jobs cover all three, in the order we do them.

  • Your Google listing, filled out properly

The suburbs you work in, the right type of business, every service you do with a line about it, your hours, and photos of real jobs. Google reads all of it.

  • Reviews that keep coming

How many reviews you have, how good they are and how recent they are all count. We build the ask into finishing each job.

  • The suburbs you actually cover

The suburbs on your listing, and a real page on your website for each suburb you want more work from, so Google connects your business to the place.

  • A website Google trusts

Google says a website that comes up well on its own helps your listing come up too. A fast website with a page for each service helps the listing, and the listing helps the website.

The three things Google looks at come straight from Google's own help page on local listings, read September 2026.

For every size of trade business

Wherever you're at, showing up locally on Google does something different for you. Here's what it looks like at each stage.

  • 1-3 on the crew

    Starter

Owner's still on the tools most days, and the work comes from word of mouth and repeat clients. That means quiet weeks you can't predict. The first win is simple: show up when someone nearby searches your trade, so the phone rings without you chasing it.

  • 4-9 on the crew

    Growing

You've got a crew to keep busy, and the quiet stretches hurt more now. This is where local SEO pays for itself. We get you showing up across every suburb you cover, so the enquiries come in steady enough to plan the roster around instead of react to.

  • 10+ on the crew

    Established

You're a known name, and now it's about owning your market: showing up wherever people in your area search your trade. That's what the work at this stage builds toward, and holding that spot is part of the job we keep doing.

Local SEO questions?

See if we answered it below.

What are the three businesses at the top of Google?

They are business listings, not websites. Every business can have one on Google for free, and Google calls it a Google Business Profile. It shows your name, your stars, your hours and a call button, and the three Google trusts most sit above every website, so they get most of the calls.

What's the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Local SEO is about your Google listing: getting it into the three at the top when someone nearby types your trade, like "plumber near me". It runs on the listing, your reviews and the suburbs you cover, and it is the quickest way to win local call-out work. SEO is about your website: getting it into the list of websites under those three, for everything else people type about your trade. Most trade businesses want both, which is why we also do SEO for tradies.

How much does local SEO cost?

It comes down to two things: how competitive your area and trade are, and how much needs fixing to begin with. Local SEO is an ongoing monthly service rather than a one-off, because the listing, the reviews and the places your business details are listed across the web all need to keep moving. As a rough guide it usually runs in the low thousands a month for a small trade business, but the honest answer is that it should be scoped to your suburbs and where you're starting from, which we work out with you on a call. There's no lock-in.

Does local SEO actually work?

The results are named on this website. Quick Mick's Plumbing went from word of mouth to page one for around 40 searches, taking about 10 new clients a month from being found, without ad spend. The reviews further up this page are from businesses we've done this work for.

Can I do local SEO myself?

The basics, yes, and they're worth doing. Claim your free Google listing and fill it all in, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere online, and ask every happy client for a review. That alone puts a lot of tradies ahead. Our Google Business Profile guide walks the whole listing field by field. The harder part is the ongoing work: keeping your business details matching everywhere online, building a real page for each suburb, and keeping reviews coming while you're on the tools.

How many areas can I show up in?

You can tell Google the suburbs you work in rather than a single address, and show up for the suburbs you drive to. Google wants that list kept to the areas you actually cover, up to 20 of them and roughly a couple of hours from your base. Listing suburbs you never work in reads as spam and can work against you. The Australian rules in full, including what to do about your address, are on local SEO in Australia.

How long does local SEO take?

In our experience the three listings start moving in about 4 to 8 weeks in a less competitive area, and 3 to 6 months in a busy metro one. It's slower than ads, but once you're there the enquiries keep coming without paying per click, and they build from there.

Is local SEO better than Google Ads?

Neither is better, they do different jobs. Local SEO builds an enquiry source you own, so once you're in the three listings the calls keep coming without paying per click. Google Ads is instant: it puts you at the top of your suburbs today, which is the move when you need work coming in this week. Plenty of our clients run both, ads for enquiries now and local SEO for the growth that compounds.

Is SEO dead in 2026?

No. What's changed is that Google now answers a lot of questions itself with AI. But local searches still end in a phone call or a booking, and the three listings still decide who gets it. Being the business Google trusts in your area matters more now, not less.

How do I get my tradie business showing up on Google Maps?

Claim your free Google listing, tell Google the suburbs you work in, pick the right type of business, list every service you do, add photos of real jobs and ask every client for a review. That is the do-it-yourself version, walked through step by step in our Google Business Profile guide. Done for you, it is this page.

Do links from other local websites help a tradesman show up?

Yes, a bit. A mention or a link from a local website, a supplier, a club you sponsor or an industry body tells Google you are a real local business, and directory listings with your exact name, address and phone do a similar job. It counts for less than your listing and your reviews, so we do those first.

Is there an SEO agency for tradies near me?

We work with trade businesses right across Australia, and everything runs by phone, email and a monthly report, so we do not need to be in your suburb. What matters more is that we only work with trades, and that our results are named on this website.
