Google Ads for tradies

What do Google Ads do for a tradie?

They put your business above the free results on Google, above the Google Business Profile listings and above the websites, from the day they go live. Someone near you searches "emergency plumber" or "roof leak repair", your ad sits above everything else on the page, and you pay Google only when they click it. Plenty of tradies still call it AdWords. It is the same thing: Google changed the name in 2018.

Why it matters: the free side of Google takes months to build. Ads bring enquiries this week, and they stop the day you switch them off.

Who it is for

It suits tradies who want the phone ringing this month, not in six. It pays off when:

  • the job is urgent: "emergency plumber" gets 8,100 searches a month across Australia (Semrush AU, July 2026)
  • you have room for more work now, and do not want to wait while the free side of Google builds
  • you want a budget you set yourself, that you can turn up, turn down or pause any week

Who is searching for your trade right now?

These are real Google searches from across Australia. "Plumber near me" gets 22,200 a month, and ads are usually sitting on top of them (every plumber search added up is 1.6 million a month, on how many people search for a plumber; every electrician search added up is about a million, on how many people search for an electrician; every builder search added up, renovations included, is 1.6 million, on how many people search for a builder; every painter search added up is about half a million, on how many people search for a painter; every carpenter search added up is about 84,000, on how many people search for a carpenter). The CPC column is an estimate of what one click has been costing; Google's own low-to-high range for each trade is further down the page.

Why have KINGTRADIE run your ads?

  • Tracking tested before launch

We send a test enquiry and make a test call, and we find both in the tracking before the ads go live. If we cannot see what a click turned into, we do not spend your money on it.

  • Worked every week

We are in the account every week, not just at setup. We read the searches your ad showed for, block the ones that are not your work, and keep the spend where the jobs are.

  • A plain report every month

Every month you get a plain report of what the clicks cost and what they turned into, plus a 15‑minute call to walk through it. Open Book: you always know what you paid for, what was done, and the result.

What it looks like when your ad is running

Someone near you searches for your trade. Ads sit above the Google Business Profile listings and every website. Which ad sits first is decided by an auction every time someone searches, and the click costs on this page are what it has cost to sit in the ad block above the free results.

Emergency Plumber Near You | Fast, Same-Day Service

Licensed local plumbers, available 7 days. Upfront pricing, no call-out surprises. Get a fast response and book online in minutes.

Illustrative example. Ads sit above every free result the moment someone searches.

What does a Google Ads click cost?

Anywhere from about A$2 to A$69, depending on the trade and how urgent the job is. There is no set price. Every click is auctioned, and where you land in the range comes down to how well the account is run. These are Google's own figures for what advertisers have paid to sit at the top of the page.

  • Urgent jobs cost the most

An "emergency plumber" click has run A$13.09 to A$68.92. "Plumber near me" runs A$11.30 to A$53.95. That is the price of sitting above the free results when someone needs help tonight.

  • Fewer bidders, cheaper clicks

A "painter near me" click runs A$5.64 to A$22.46, "carpenter near me" A$3.24 to A$10.80, and "handyman near me" starts at A$1.97. The number of businesses bidding sets the price, not the number of people searching.

Real click costs by trade, Australia

  • Plumber near me: A$11.30 to A$53.95 a click
  • Electrician near me: A$10.01 to A$38.73
  • Roofer near me: A$6.71 to A$30.20
  • Air conditioning near me: A$5.25 to A$22.28
  • Pest control near me: A$6.34 to A$21.73
  • Landscaper near me: A$3.84 to A$12.85
  • Emergency electrician: A$6.18 to A$40.76

What does Google Ads management cost?

Two bills, and they are separate. The ad spend goes straight to Google on your own card. The management fee goes to whoever runs the account, and we give you ours on a call, before a cent is spent.

  • Paid to Google

    Ad spend

The money the clicks cost. You set it, you can change it any week, and it goes on your own card. Australian pricing guides put a sensible starting point at $1,000 to $2,000 a month. Their reasoning: under that, there is too little to learn from.

  • Paid to the manager

    Management fee

Across four Australian pricing guides published February to July 2026, a small account runs $800 to $2,000 a month flat, or 10 to 20 per cent of the spend (read 1 September 2026). Cheaper exists, and so does $5,000 a month. Ours is a fixed monthly fee, quoted on the call.

  • One-off

    Setup

Building the campaigns, the tracking and the page the ads land on. The same guides put it at $750 to $2,000 as a one-off. Ask what it covers, so it is not a surprise on the first invoice.

How do we run your ads week to week?

  • Before launch Call and form tracking wired up and test-fired. Nothing goes live until we have sent a real test enquiry and found it, and made a real test call and seen it logged.
  • The build One campaign per service, so blocked drains and hot water do not fight over one budget. Every search is costed from Google's own bid ranges, and you sign off the budget before anything runs.
  • Every week We check the campaigns are running, read every search that showed your ad and block the ones that are not your work, adjust what we bid, and keep the spend on track against the budget you approved. Every week, no skipped weeks.
  • Every month Fresh ad copy, a plain report showing what your clicks cost and what they turned into, and a 15-minute call to walk you through it. Any change to the budget is your call, never ours.

Google Ads questions?

See if we answered it below.

How long until the enquiries start?

The ad shows from the day it goes live, so the clicks start straight away. Enquiries follow the clicks. The first month is spent learning which searches turn into jobs for you, and the numbers usually improve from there.

What does it cost?

Two things. The ad spend, paid to Google on your own card, which Australian pricing guides start at $1,000 to $2,000 a month. And the management fee, which on the 2026 Australian market runs about $800 to $2,000 a month for a small account. You get our exact fee on a call, and you sign off the budget before a cent is spent.

Does it actually work?

It puts your ad in front of people searching for your trade from the first day, and the monthly report shows what each click and call cost. Whether it pays depends on the trade, the area and what happens after the phone rings. Ads only get the person to your door. If calls go unanswered or quotes sit for days, that is the follow-up, not the ads, and we will tell you straight which one it is.

Why run Google ads instead of just SEO?

Speed and control. The free side of Google takes months to build, and you cannot turn it up on a quiet week. Ads start this week, run on a budget you set, and stop the moment you are booked out. The usual play is ads now while the free side builds, then wind the ads back once the free listings carry the work.

Is AdWords the same as Google Ads?

Yes, same product. Google renamed AdWords to Google Ads on 24 July 2018, and the change was branding only: Google confirmed campaign performance and reporting were not affected. If you have been searching for AdWords management for your trade business, Google Ads management is the current name for exactly that.

Why did Google rename AdWords?

The name outgrew the product. When Google announced the change in June 2018, it pointed to ads now running across Search, YouTube, Google Maps and partner websites and apps, no longer just search terms, so AdWords became Google Ads. For tradies the search side still brings the enquiries, and that is the side we manage.

How much does a Google Ads click cost for tradies?

It is a range you bid into, not a fixed price, and it swings by trade and city. From Google's own top-of-page bid figures, an "emergency plumber" click runs about A$13 to A$69, a "roofer near me" click A$7 to A$30, and a "handyman near me" click starts near A$2. The full table by trade and city is in our Google Ads click costs by trade.

Are Google Local Services Ads available in Australia?

No. Google's own list of countries where Local Services Ads run has 11 countries on it, and Australia is not one of them (checked 1 September 2026). If someone pitches you "Google Guaranteed" or Local Services Ads here, they are selling something that does not exist in Australia yet. Regular Google ads, your Google Business Profile and a website that gets found are what work here. More on our advertising for tradies guide.

Can I run Google ads myself?

You can, and plenty of tradies do. The catch is that Google Ads reward constant attention: what you bid, which searches show your ad, which ones you block, and the page the ad lands on all need tending, and a few wrong settings can burn a week of budget on clicks that never call. Paying someone earns its keep when it saves you more in wasted spend and won jobs than it costs, and keeps you on the tools. If your spend is small or you enjoy the tinkering, doing it yourself is fair enough.

Do I own my Google Ads account?

Yes, always. We set the account up in your name, and the account, the data and the campaign history stay yours. Some agencies keep it in their own account so you cannot take it when you leave. We do not. If we ever part ways, everything goes with you.

Am I locked into a contract?

No lock-in. We run your ads month to month and back the work to bring you enquiries. You stay because the phone is ringing, not because a contract has you trapped.
